Top tips for choosing your baby girl name
You want to choose a name for your baby girl that you – and she – will love forever. No big ask, then! To make the whole process feel easier and less overwhelming, follow these top name-picking tips.- Consider girl names that mean a lot to your family. You may want to think about naming your child after a much-loved relative or perhaps there's a particular name that's been passed down your or your partner's family for generations.
- Think about options from other countries. If you or your partner have a strong link with another country, choosing a baby girl name from that part of the world is a great way of honouring that connection. You may also want to look at names from places you've loved to visit on holiday.
- Look at name meanings. Take a moment to consider the type of name you want your baby girl to have. Do you want a strong, powerful name or more something delicate and gentle? Perhaps you like the idea of a name that reflects your love of nature or your religious beliefs or even a special time of the year?
- Troubleshoot your choices. Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist of names you like, take them for a test drive to see whether they will work in reality. How does the name sound when said with your surname? What will the initials be? Will people find it easy to pronounce or will your child have a lifetime of correcting others? Is it simple to spell or will people always be making mistakes? What nicknames might people call your child? How can it be shortened?
- Check how popular the girl names you like are. It’s a good idea to check out where your favourite baby girl names come in the top 100 list before you commit to one. If it's on the list, think how that makes you feel. Are you happy that your girl may probably be sharing her name with one of her classmates at school or is it super-important to you that your girl's names is as different and as distinct as possible.

When do I have to choose my baby's girl name by?
New parents in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have 42 days to register their baby’s name once he is born. If you live in Scotland, you will be expected to register your baby’s birth (and name) within 3 weeks of his birth.
Once you have picked a name, contact your local register office for an appointment to go in and register your baby’s birth.
You will need to take some identification with you to prove who you are and some registrars may ask to see your baby’s red book, which is their personal health record. When you register the birth, you will be asked your baby’s full name as well as details about when and where he was born.
The birth must be registered by the baby’s mother or father and if you are unmarried and go to the register office alone, you will have to take a declaration of parentage form signed by the other parent with you.

Indian baby girl names

Naming a baby in India is usually accompanied by a big family ceremony son (on the 11th day after birth, in Hindu tradition). Immense care is taken with the name selection, with parents sometimes calling on a 'pandit' (a wise man) to cast the baby girl's astrology chart and select a letter of the alphabet that the name should begin with. Great weight is also placed on the meaning of the name and, for that reason, Indian baby girl names, whether modern or traditional, Hindi or Urdu, tend to have light-filled, auspicious, harmonious meanings and origins based in Sanskrit, or sometimes Persian or Arabic. About the '100 most popular names' list
Every year in October, the Office of National Statistics publishes a list of the most popular names in England and Wales for both girls and boys. Because of the time needed to collect and process all the data, each new list is always based on names registered up to 2 years ago. So, the the most recent list is based on names registered in 2021. Scotland's National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland's Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency also each release their own list every year, gathered in the same way.
